About this deal

Atlas of Brutalist Architecture by Phaidon presents hundreds of brutalist masterpieces – existing and demolished – and their designers from different corners of the world. Today, any building made of concrete is questioned whether another material could be used instead, entirely or, at least, in part, as a hybrid structure. The book condenses critical discussions about pedagogical, collaborative and inclusive approaches that can be taken to enhance the representation of spaces in galleries and museums.

The style is defined by block-like forms—predominantly made from concrete or brick—with angular geometric shapes, unadorned structures, textured surfaces, simple silhouettes, and raw materials. That a high proportion of the buildings which many generations of man-kind had agreed to regard as masterpieces failed to reach this exalted standard was held to be quite irrelevant. Phaidon offers readers new perspectives on their everyday surroundings, encouraging individuals to re-evaluate the built environments. Of course, starting from the late 1990s churches were replaced by museums as the most compelling building type.

Plattenbau, Panelák, Wielka Płyta, Panelky, Panelház or Панельки: Prefabricated panel blocks go by different names around the former Eastern Bloc, but no matter where they were built, their goal was always the same. Studio Fuksas’s San Paolo Church and Parish Complex built in Umbria, Italy, in 2009, is depicted in five pages. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. Covering the period between 1950 and 1970, it uses new photography and archive imagery to rally for preservation and recognition, making it a must for lovers of architecture’s more far-flung fringes.

Twentieth-century masters included in the book: Marcel Breuer, Lina Bo Bardi, Le Corbusier, Carlo Scarpa, Ernö Goldfinger, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, Oscar Niemeyer, and Paul Rudolph. He is caustic in his remarks and brutal in his comments about people, not hesitant to display an abysmal contempt for society at large and for the countless people who crossed his path. Featured architects include: John Andrews; João Batista Vilanova Artigas; Lina Bo Bardi; Bogdan Bogdanović; Marcel Breuer; Douglas Cardinal; André-Jacques Dunoyer de Segonzac; Bertrand Goldberg; Ernő Goldfinger; Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak; Agustín Hernández Navarro; John M.The Killara House is a magical place I not only visited but stayed at as a guest for extended periods of time. Architecture is a complex discipline and not all buildings can be simply categorized into periods and styles. It considers how specific built elements and volumes, taken from a wide array of buildings and settings around the world, can sustain or deny our powers of decision. The collection features buildings scattered around the arrondissements, as well as the infamous suburban banlieues.

Similarities as well as differences are explored and analysed using a series of impressive architectural projects. Almost all of the architects here are represented by a single building, while just seven masters have two buildings each. For the exhibition in Chicago, curator Noemi Blager brings together works by ten architects hailing from both the Global North and the Global South. From the Ural Mountains to the Arctic Circle, the book contains over 100 photographs exploring the post-war modernist microrayons of the Siberian cities of Novosibirsk, Omsk, Krasnoyarsk, Norilsk, Irkutsk and Yakutsk and the quotidian lives of their inhabitants. And to balance the selection with names that are less familiar the author did not include buildings by such masters as Jørn Utzon, Carlo Scarpa, Balkrishna Doshi, or this year’s Pritzker Prize winner David Chipperfield. Jonathan Bell has written for Wallpaper* magazine since 1999, covering everything from architecture and transport design to books, tech and graphic design. It is damned by its name which comes from the French, béton brut, or raw concrete, but we use the same word (Brut) to describe Champagne and this perhaps sums up the dichotomy at the heart of this style. This is despite the fact that China is known for its voracious appetite for concrete consumption and such local firms as Amateur Architecture Studio, Jiakun Architects, Atelier Deshaus, and Vector Architects are renowned for their Brutalist architecture. As global populations are projected to shift to 80-90% urban in the next 30 years, architects are faced with a growing challenge: how to accommodate all this growth in limited space?Brutalist Paris is very far from being a light-hearted skim over the uncompromising aesthetics of the city’s post-war concrete architecture. While museums used to be invariably in city centres, they may now be in remote locations, destinations of cultural pilgrimage. Much-loved masterpieces in the UK and USA sit alongside lesser-known examples in Europe, Asia, Australia, and beyond ― 102 countries in all, proving that Brutalism was, and continues to be, a truly international architectural phenomenon.
