Description

The horizontal part underneath the gutter is called a soffit. It is fitted tightly under the guttering and the role of the soffit board is to protect the underside of the rafter feet from wear and tear from tough weather conditions. The next step is to measure the ‘kite’. This is the upper part of the box end and is a scalene triangle (a triangle with no equal sides or angles). Leaking gutters –gutters can easily develop leaks if they are not cleaned frequently. Balls, leaves and other debris can clog up gutters, and during the colder months those pools of water freeze and expand, damaging the gutter. For the best results, use stainless steel fixing screws longer than recommended by the gutter manufacturer (i.e. minimum 9, 16 or 18mm longer – dependent on your fascia choice). These Square Tube Inserts are useful for all kinds of functional use and protection, and are recommended for capping the end of a box section. They also offer internal protection and integration through the use of tube connectors or threaded inserts. These Square Tube Caps / Tube Ends are easily fitted, featuring ribs which hold the insert tightly in position, which allows them to offer a truly long term finish that can be installed by hand.

The purpose of a Box End is to further protect the timber rafters within your roof construction. It also reduces the number of joints that would appear on traditional timber roofline methods. We see many examples of poorly constructed box ends and you probably won’t have to look far to see one of these yourself. For the next step, you should remove a section from the corner joint that will be used to fit around the rafter. This will be used as the joint for the pieces that were created in steps 2 and 3. Step 5: Attach the bargeboard It can be a little confusing, but the points should be very apparent as these are the only ones you will be able to get measurements from. B. Measure and cut box end from a deep board. Front edge should tilt up to match height of fascia board. Not if it’s done correctly. There are a number of ways to do the job, simply because box ends can be either jointed or single fitted. Please note that categories such as - Square Inserts upto 76.2mm - Will contain all measurements between the previous and next category. Dry Verge –Dry verge can be installed to protect the verge area above the bargeboard on the gable and prevents you ever having to have this area re-pointed again. Do I need soffit and fascia? If you are prepared to wait till we are quieter – and can allow us to commence work with just 48 hours notice – then, in return for your flexibility, I’ll give you my Roofline Special Offer and fit your new roofline at a reduced rate.

Edge Building Products A4 grade stainless steel plastic headed nails or capped screws. See below table. Product Alternatively, if your fascia is foiled, it needs to be fitted at 300mm centres maximum (i.e. no greater than 300mm).

Once the box end is fitted into the corner moulding, measure and cut the return from your fascia board, and fit in place using plastic headed screws. The first step when building a box end is to install the fascia board so it’s level with the face of the rafter situated at the gable end. When doing this, make sure that the soffit is cut either square or mitred and it has an overhang of 10mm. Step 2: Creating the box end Flaking and peeling paint –sanding and re-painting the affected area promptly can prevent further damage. This is a job which will have to be repeated year on year, as painted timber fascias and soffits will continuously flake and peel due to the extreme weather conditions they are subject to. Traditionally, timber fascia and soffits would be installed; however, this merely creates a lifetime of difficult maintenance. You repeatedly have to be up a ladder to ensure the condition of the timber remains good through continual painting, treatment and repairs. Bargeboard –The bargeboard provides a decorative finish to the gable end of your home, sealing the end rafters and the verge.

In addition to the above problems, there are several other reasons why you might need to replace your soffits and fascias, including: The vertical part under a gutter is called the downpipe. The pipes are aligned vertically downwards and their role is to take rain and debris to the ground floor level, and out of the guttering into the drainage system. Downpipes are also referred to as downspout, drain spout, roof drain pipe or a leader. Common problems with fascias and soffits

Barge boards, Gable ends or the apex are all the terms that are used to refer to the fascias that are fitted to the ends or sides of the roof. Children between the ages of 6 to 9 must be accompanied on the apparatus by a paying adult on a 1 adult to 3 child basis. A roof soffit is a covering which sits between the outer edges of your roof and the adjacent wall of the house, protecting and sealing the rafter feet. If your roof has a soffit (not all do), you will be able to see it if you stand underneath the overhang of your roof and lookup. Guttering – Collects rainwater from the roof and discharges it into the downpipes. All gutters are levelled and aligned to ensure that they have the correct fall, leading to the rainwater running in the correct direction and down the downpipe. Once the soffits and fascia are in place, guttering and ventilation can be installed. If you have profiled tiles on your roof, then you may opt to have bird combs installed to prevent small birds from gaining access to your roof space.

Remember, you’ll need to leave a small gap for expansion between fascia planks. Allow 10mm between each plank, and 5mm at each end (8mm for foiled fascias). For the third step, you need to measure the length of the return to the gable wall and cut this length from a fascia board. This piece should sit in front of the rafter end and run up to the box end piece that you made in the previous step.
