Description

Salomon always boasts a fabulous outsole, it grips like teeth to the ground and is great on both wet and dry ground. The lugs with deep penetration offer superb grip on soft surfaces such as mud or loose dirt. The Supercross 3 uses Contagrip TD, built for maximum traction on varied terrain and durable enough to withstand the most challenging trails. Built with large lugs, the Speedcross delivers optimum grip to keep you grounded.

The first noticeable thing about the Supercross 3 is the commanding grip that uses distinct and comprehensive lugs that sink into the ground with confidence and reassurance. Flexibility and responsiveness are never affected by the grip, with plenty of push-off for those times when you need a helping hand. The flexible construction is exactly the type of composition you want in trail shoes; your feet will move in directions based on the terrain you encounter. The SensiFit system is perfect to provide your feet with that hug-like feel. The generous width is actually a benefit rather than a hindrance as if you have wide feet like me, then you'll find it useful. You can see the massive difference between the height of the foam underfoot in the forefoot and the heel. The heel is very protective, while the forefoot is rather sensitive. You can also see that while there are a lot of overlays on the upper, the crease point on the forefoot is left exposed to abrasion and early tearing. Although the Salomon shoe provides plenty of support and grip for trail runs, they are not mountaineering boots. With foot protection classed as light, what they lose in grip and ankle stability, they make up for with a lightweight and flexible feel, allowing you to move swiftly on the run.A robust and aggressive grip makes it easy to dig into dirt safely whilst providing all the flexibility needed for ground feel and plenty of push-ups. Trail running needs a secure shoe that isn't slippy or sloppy, and the Supercross 3 provides an incredibly personalized fit with the use of SensiFit™ technology and a snug heel fit. The EnergyCell Midsole used for the Salomon Supercross 3 is a famous kit that Salomon often uses in their hikers and trail runners. This multi-functional EVA Foam Midsole provides a mixture of comfort and protection. However, Salomon does recommend this shoe is for occasional use, which usually means once or twice a week. This fact suggests the Supercross 3 is not as durable as some of Salomon's other ranges. It's a more comfortable ride for your foot which gives you that better feeling with every stride, especially on trail runs that are harsher on your feet.

Unfortunately, given the timing (summer) and location (Front Range of Colorado) of my reviewing for the Supercross, I have not encountered any mud, but an educated guess is that the Supercross would be better in mud specifically, however the XA Elevate (and X Alpine Pro) have superior wet traction, so would consider what comes after or intermittently with the muddy sections. The Salomon S/LAB Ultra 3 trail running shoe provides a comfort level so high you'll think you're wearing a road running shoe. With a highly breathable, lightweight upper and a midsole made of the most durable foam, you'll experience comfy cushioning and protection for long-distance use. Hugging your feet securely means the Supercross 3 can maximize energy transfer to the outsole while allowing your foot to stay comfortable and connected to the ground, creating extra comfort and support through those muddy paths. In addition, Salomon class this as a regular cushioned shoe, so although it is comfortable, it may not provide you with the extreme comfort to keep off soreness and fatigue from multi-day trips. How can this be a running shoe if it's not comfortable? Don't worry; this Salomon trail running shoe provides superior comfort with an Ortholite insole, which is super comfortable, hygienic, and allows for fresher feet for longer. However, this Ortholite insole can be thinner than EVA foam midsoles, potentially decreasing the comfort for super long hikes.

The padding of the sole is most aggressive in the heel and as perfectly suited for those heel strikers out there. The weave of the upper material reminded me of rip-stop fabric used in tents and other outdoor gear. It looks pretty rugged but retains a high level of breathability. The Salomon Supercross is an excellent choice for someone looking to have a shoe that’s ready to take their trail running up a notch. Hitting the trails in the northern Front Range of Colorado when the aspen leaves are at their peak is a real treat, here running in the Supercross.

Jeff: Aside from a few minor limitations, such a foothold, warm upper, no lace garage or Endofit, I find the Supercross to be an excellent addition to the Salomon line up in that it is a very fairly priced shoe with enough performance, comfort, traction, durability and versatility to satisfy a wide variety of runners and hikers who are looking for maximum value. The Contragrip compound that Salomon uses has excellent grip in wet conditions. The shoe cushioning is pretty decent, considering the weight of the shoe. I found it to be ample. The Salomon Supercross are an affordable and wide fitting shoe with the same insane traction that the Speedcross has become known for, and also feature a similar 10mm heel-toe drop. They are a comfortable trail runner designed for the everyman. A very aggressive sole allows for some semi-rugged trail running but does not deter a leisurely run around an urban trail area. The shoe is lightweight for a trail runner, has a responsive feel, and boasts a comfortable fit. The insole of any shoe is important as it gives your foot that comfort that it desires while it pounds the ground.

The Supercross is a great option for travel where some running in the mix, fast hiking, and around town due to its easy on and off, generous fit, and traction. I was bowled over by the appearance of the Salomon Supercross 3 gtx; they are a really attractive shoe that doesn't have too much bulk. This flexible shoe is both breathable and lightweight and will enhance your performance, adding more pleasure to your run. This shoe hit my training cycle right at the perfect time. My long Ultras are done for the year, and my mileage has tapered off a bit, but the trails around Missoula are still pretty run-able.

The tongue is connected to the upper on both sides which keeps the tongue centered and keeps debris out, It also adds to the overall look of the shoe. You won't need to worry about your laces coming loose. The Salomon Supercross 3 GTX benefits from laces that will keep your foot stable and secure with every stride.
